Introducing ClickHouse's new TimeSeries Engine: Your drop-In Prometheus replacement

ClickHouse Cloud has announced a private preview that adds PromQL support and a TimeSeries table engine, allowing organizations to ingest Prometheus metrics through the remote-write v1 protocol and query them without rewriting existing PromQL dashboards, alerts, or queries in SQL. The offering is intended to let teams consolidate metrics alongside logs and traces in ClickHouse while preserving Prometheus semantics for counters, gauges, histograms, irregular scrape intervals, resets, and range-query calculations. Metrics can be queried through Prometheus-compatible HTTP APIs, Grafana, ClickStack, the ClickHouse client using a PromQL dialect, or SQL table functions, while existing Prometheus servers, agents, and OpenTelemetry collectors can retain their collection configurations. ClickStack’s preview integration supports PromQL-based charts, dashboards, series and scalar queries, including variables for coordinated filtering across telemetry data, although it does not yet include a visual query builder or PromQL alerting. Current PromQL coverage exceeds 85%, and planned work includes broader language support, downsampling, native histograms, recording and alerting rules, additional protocols such as remote-write v2 and OpenMetrics, and possible unified support for OpenTelemetry metrics.
