Summary

An experiment comparing two ways to build a Java Swing application for Salesforce Account CRUD operations found that Claude Code’s direct REST API implementation required substantial debugging around OAuth PKCE authentication, hardcoded picklist values, API request handling, and Salesforce-specific schema assumptions. Although the REST-based application eventually worked, it involved 12 files, roughly 250 lines of authentication and client code, more than five build-test-fix cycles, and an estimated two hours of development. In the alternative approach, CData Code Assist MCP gave Claude Code access to Salesforce schema metadata and configured picklist values during development, while the CData JDBC driver provided SQL-based runtime connectivity and configuration-driven authentication. The blog reports that this reduced custom connectivity code, minimized debugging, and shortened estimated development time to about 15 minutes, while also offering potential maintenance benefits for API version changes, evolving schemas, and authentication updates. It argues that metadata-aware AI coding tools can avoid guesswork and support more complex Salesforce queries, including joins among accounts, opportunities, and contacts.
