Summary

Chrome DevTools for Agents, or chrome-devtools-mcp, is an open-source MCP server that lets AI coding agents control Chromium browsers through the Chrome DevTools Protocol, supporting navigation, element interaction, JavaScript execution, screenshots, network inspection, debugging, and performance analysis. Although it provides extensive browser-control capabilities, locally launched headless sessions can be detected by websites and consume substantial resources when scaled. Bright Data’s Browser API is presented as a cloud-based alternative that connects through a CDP WebSocket endpoint and supplies managed browser sessions with proxy rotation, CAPTCHA solving, fingerprinting, geo-targeting, and high concurrency. The integration can be configured in tools such as Gemini CLI or Claude Code by adding chrome-devtools-mcp with Bright Data’s endpoint via the wsEndpoint setting, after which agents can access dozens of DevTools functions. A Booking.com test illustrates how an agent can navigate a protected site, select travel criteria, apply filters, and extract hotel data using browser snapshots, clicks, and custom scripts, while other suggested uses include inspecting API responses, monitoring network requests, analyzing performance, and debugging JavaScript errors.
