Agentic Registration: How an AI Agent Signs Up for Bright Data With auth.md
Blog post from Bright Data
Bright Data describes a proprietary agent-registration protocol that lets an AI agent obtain an API token through HTTP requests while requiring a human to verify ownership of an email address by supplying a one-time code. The approach is intended to avoid standard browser-based signup steps that many AI systems are prohibited from performing, such as account creation, CAPTCHA completion, and accepting terms without explicit consent. Agents discover the currently supported flow through authorization-server metadata, submit a verified email to receive a claim token, and exchange that token plus the user-provided six-character code for an API credential and three preconfigured zones for SERP, Web Unlocker, and Browser API access. New accounts receive 5,000 monthly free credits and a limited seven-day trial credit, while the issued token has restricted administrative and billing permissions and cannot create zones or access residential proxies. The protocol provides guidance for retries, expiration, rate limits, fraud screening, credential handling, and error responses, emphasizing that tokens must be kept secret and discarded if they return a 401 response. Alternative onboarding options include pasting an existing API token, using OAuth with Bright Data’s hosted MCP service, or logging in through its CLI, while planned GitHub-token and anonymous registration methods are not currently available.
