One in three Americans have a side hustle

According to a recent survey conducted by Zapier and The Harris Poll, approximately one-third of Americans have a side hustle, with 34% of the population actively engaged in such activities. A significant portion of these individuals plan to start a side hustle in 2021, with around 61 million Americans projected to take this step. Many side hustles are relatively new, with two-thirds of existing side hustlers starting their venture within the past three years. The motivations for starting a side hustle vary, but financial goals such as creating passive income and diversifying income are common reasons. Non-financial reasons include doing something enjoyable or developing new skills. Interestingly, parents of children under 18 are more likely to start a side hustle, often driven by non-financial motivations rather than direct financial gain. Despite the challenges involved, the majority of Americans remain interested in starting or continuing their side hustles.
