Private Deposits into Public DeFi: Zama's First Confidential Vault Design

Zama's first version of the confidential vault stack innovatively bridges the gap between confidential tokens and onchain yield by allowing holders of confidential tokens to deposit into public ERC-4626 vaults without exposing their individual deposit amounts. This is achieved by leveraging OpenZeppelin's BatcherConfidential, a general-purpose primitive that pools user deposits in encrypted form, revealing only the aggregate total upon dispatch. By reusing this existing primitive, Zama provides a production-grade confidential infrastructure that balances simplicity and security, while also enabling vault operations without compromising user privacy. The system introduces concepts like slippage protection, a callback deadline, and ensures that user funds are never permanently stuck, with privacy scaling according to the number of depositors in a batch. Although it doesn't claim perfect privacy against a determined adversary, it significantly enhances privacy and is designed to evolve, potentially reducing costs and increasing anonymity by optimizing the confidentiality/plaintext boundary in future versions.
