Inside a YugabyteDB Internship

YugabyteDB software engineering intern Angela Xu recounts joining the query-layer team with no prior distributed systems background and progressing from onboarding tasks such as backend logging, runtime library loading, and index consistency improvements to a customer-facing password credential management project. Her work added profile-level password expiry and reuse controls to YugabyteDB through native role-management commands and a globally replicated system catalog that records password history, avoiding the inconsistency and security risks of local-file-based extensions in distributed deployments. The implementation blocks reuse through both time-based and count-based history rules, supports MD5 and SCRAM-SHA-256 hashing, and treats pre-hashed passwords as incompatible with reuse policies to prevent circumvention through alternate hashes of the same password. Xu also describes a collaborative, technically focused workplace culture, company events and offsite activities, mentorship, and her growing interest in open-source distributed database development.
