Trying DX Core 4 on Skeptical Developers: First Impressions

DX Core 4 is a new framework designed to address the long-standing challenge of measuring developer productivity by unifying aspects of the popular DORA, SPACE, and DevEx frameworks, and it focuses on four key metrics: Speed, Effectiveness, Quality, and Impact. While the WireMock team approached it with skepticism due to past experiences with productivity metrics, they found that DX Core 4 aligns well with their perceptions of productivity, providing tangible targets for team reflection and process discussions. The framework's ease of use, quick self-assessment, and readily available metrics offer a non-intrusive way to establish a baseline for progress, contrasting with more complex systems like DORA. Although the team is undecided about fully adopting DX Core 4, they appreciate its contribution to the ongoing discourse on measuring engineering effectiveness and plan to use it for periodic comparisons throughout the year.
