Fans of Gitpod and VSCode IDEs can now enjoy a free AI autocomplete feature, thanks to recent updates aimed at streamlining the extension download and authentication process to match the efficient user experience of local IDEs. The focus extends to supporting notebook-based development, with more enhancements expected soon, as part of an ongoing effort to minimize the overhead of using Codeium. Improvements include prioritizing native suggestions in Jetbrains, addressing file compatibility issues with carriage returns, resolving UTF-8 encoding problems, enhancing proxy support, and expanding CPU compatibility by removing the AVX2 requirement. The development team dedicated significant time to building the necessary infrastructure in December to improve prompt building, enable cross-OS/IDE support, and track system metrics, laying the groundwork for accelerated development in 2023.
