Amazon CodeWhisperer is out of beta. We tried it. Spoiler: it isn’t good.

Amazon CodeWhisperer, recently released from beta, is an AI-powered coding tool by Amazon aimed at offering free unlimited autocomplete suggestions for individuals, positioning itself as a competitor to GitHub Copilot and others in the LLM-for-code space. However, CodeWhisperer faces substantial challenges, including limited feature availability, poor suggestion quality, unstable latency, and issues with non-permissive license violations. Despite being free for individuals, it lags in language support, IDE compatibility, and enterprise features compared to peers like Codeium and Replit Ghostwriter. Usability tests reveal significant shortcomings, such as aggressive and inaccurate code suggestions, difficulty integrating with existing code, and unpredictable latency. Additionally, CodeWhisperer struggles with licensing checks, often producing non-permissively licensed code without detection. While there is potential for improvement, the current iteration of CodeWhisperer is notably behind other AI coding assistants in terms of functionality and user experience.
