reCAPTCHAs: Blocking bots, preserving history, and inspiring memes
Blog post from Webflow
Google's reCAPTCHA is an evolution of the original CAPTCHA test from Carnegie Mellon University, designed to differentiate humans from bots and protect websites from spam and abuse. While initially focused on preventing automated web abuse, reCAPTCHA also played a crucial role in digitizing historical texts by enlisting users to transcribe words from scanned documents, including The New York Times archives. As reCAPTCHA evolved, it incorporated image recognition tasks using Google Street View images, enhancing Google's data for services like Google Maps, but also raising concerns about unpaid labor and data privacy. Despite these controversies, reCAPTCHA has permeated internet culture, spawning numerous memes that humorously highlight the challenges and absurdities of these verification tasks. The creator of CAPTCHA, Luis von Ahn, later applied similar principles to his language learning app, Duolingo, where user interactions initially supported translation services as a revenue model.
