Going 2D: How flat design improves a website
Blog post from Webflow
Flat design, a minimalistic approach focusing on two-dimensional elements, simplifies web interfaces by using uncomplicated icons, shapes, and sans-serif typography, which enhances readability and usability across various screen sizes. This design style removes three-dimensional elements like shading and highlights, creating a user-friendly experience that may improve loading times and is ideal for brands seeking straightforward communication. In contrast, skeuomorphic design imitates real-life objects, using shadows and gradients to add depth, which can provide a more intuitive connection between digital products and their real-world counterparts. Although skeuomorphic design fell out of favor in 2007, it remains useful for creating familiarity and representing 3D objects on screen. Both design styles offer distinct advantages, with flat design focusing on clarity and skeuomorphism offering depth and familiarity.
