Freelancer and contractor: What’s the difference?

The gig economy has led to a rise in freelancing and contracting, offering alternatives to traditional 9-5 employment. While salaried employees and independent workers each have their own advantages and disadvantages, neither is inherently superior. Independent contractors typically handle temporary jobs on a contract basis, often focusing on one job at a time and setting their own rates, whereas freelancers work on a project-to-project basis with multiple clients and enjoy greater flexibility in choosing their work and setting schedules. Freelancers often provide digital and creative services, while contractors may work in trades requiring specific certifications. The two roles differ in terms of client relationships, project timelines, payment structures, and work locations. Both freelancers and contractors are responsible for self-employment taxes and generally do not receive traditional employment benefits, although some contract positions offer stipends to cover costs. Unlike employees who have ongoing contracts with benefits and fixed hours, contractors have finite contracts and manage their own tax liabilities.
