Building the Webflow accessibility checklist
Blog post from Webflow
Initially addressing accessibility issues in their web pages through a lightweight checklist, the team recognized the limitations of this approach as it only touched on basic accessibility considerations and was implemented too late in the design process. To improve, they began referencing more comprehensive web accessibility guidelines like WCAG 2.1, but found them too technical and not tailored to their specific needs. This led to the creation of their own set of accessible guidelines, designed to be comprehensive, easy to understand, and specific to Webflow implementations. Initially meant for internal use to enhance WCAG AA compliance, the guidelines were later shared publicly in honor of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, aiming to foster a more accessible web. The development process involved consolidating internal checklists, consulting a variety of resources, and working with accessibility experts. They emphasized clarity and simplicity in their guidelines, adopting a conversational tone and structuring them for easy comprehension. The checklist was initially housed in Coda for internal tracking but was later built in Webflow to leverage its functionality, accessibility, and SEO optimization for broader community use.
