The six skills of agentic coding every developer needs to master in 2027
Blog post from Weave
As coding agents become widely available, the key differentiator for engineers is the ability to direct, contextualize, verify, and take responsibility for AI-assisted work rather than merely accept plausible outputs. Agentic coding is presented as a distinct craft because natural-language instructions are probabilistic, making developers responsible for clear specifications, relevant context, and evidence-based validation. The framework identifies six connected skills: planning explicit goals and constraints; managing coherent AI context; verifying results beyond passing commands or self-authored tests; parallelizing agents through distinct responsibilities and deliberate integration; collaborating through clear shared task state and durable handoffs; and retaining ownership of goals, trade-offs, and readiness decisions. Improvement comes from reviewing failed agent conversations, identifying the specific missing skill involved, and practicing weaker areas such as verification and coordination. As models handle more implementation work, human value is expected to concentrate increasingly in direction, judgment, context, and validation.
