Software factories are presented as code-defined infrastructure stacks for automating software development, designed to be open to any models, agents, and hosting configurations, composable for partial adoption, and versioned for testing, benchmarking, and rollback. The proposed architecture includes a factories-as-code foundation containing agent configurations, runners, repositories, automations, integrations, and evaluation tools; a pluggable context layer for organizational data, memories, agent traces, telemetry, skills, and secure access controls; and a self-hostable compute layer with remote development environments, browser and computer-use capabilities, and cross-platform support. An inference layer should accommodate multiple frontier and open-weight models, agent harnesses, hosting sources, and adjustable routing to balance quality, speed, and cost. Improvement infrastructure relies on observable metrics, scoring, replay, benchmarking, and automated recommendations, while orchestration provides runtime management, failure recovery, subagent coordination, live steering, and a central control dashboard. Finally, an API-first access layer connects the factory with coding agents, workplace tools, code repositories, and user interfaces, enabling unified control of work and factory configuration.
