Vultr Joins National Compute Consortium to Expand Access to Frontier AI Infrastructure
Blog post from Vultr
Vultr has joined National Compute as a founding consortium member, contributing infrastructure to the Grid Exchange, a shared AI compute pool intended to give startups, universities, researchers, and government labs more flexible access to high-performance resources. The initiative aggregates capacity across cloud providers, locations, and chip architectures including NVIDIA, AMD, and TPUs, using an orchestration layer to match workloads with available compute rather than relying on long-term hyperscaler contracts. Its “goodput” pricing model emphasizes completed, uninterrupted work instead of merely allocated GPU-hours, rewarding reliability and efficient utilization; similar methods reportedly increased Google fleet occupancy from about 65% to 99% at gigawatt scale. National Compute aims to reach 2 GW of pooled capacity by 2030, with statistical multiplexing expected to reduce idle capacity as more providers and workloads participate. The effort is positioned as a way to lower barriers to frontier AI research, support heterogeneous infrastructure needs, and advance U.S. scientific and AI competitiveness priorities.
