From Satellite Data to Planetary AI: How TESSERA Is Transforming Earth Observation
Blog post from Vultr
TESSERA is revolutionizing Earth observation by using foundation models to transform vast amounts of satellite data into reusable AI embeddings, making environmental monitoring more accessible and efficient. Traditionally, turning satellite data into useful insights required significant computational resources and specific AI models for each application, such as crop monitoring or biodiversity mapping. TESSERA changes this by processing years of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data into AI embeddings that represent every 10-meter square of Earth's land surface, allowing researchers to create new applications with less data and compute power. Supported by Vultr and AMD infrastructure, the University of Cambridge has developed this planetary-scale AI to democratize access to environmental monitoring, offering the potential for diverse applications in agriculture, insurance, and renewable energy. By making these embeddings freely available, TESSERA aims to accelerate scientific discovery and practical applications for better understanding and protecting the planet.
