Volkswagen Builds a Physical AI Data Flywheel with Voxel51
Blog post from Voxel51
Porsche, Volkswagen Group brands, and CARIAD have announced a shared autonomous-vehicle data flywheel, initially led by Porsche and integrated with Voxel51, NVIDIA, and Microsoft Azure, to connect real-world fleet data with simulation, model training, and validation for advanced driving systems. Volkswagen Group contributes connected-fleet data, vehicle platforms, and development requirements, while Voxel51 supplies a multimodal data layer for searching driving logs, automated labeling, scenario curation, dataset balancing, and model evaluation; NVIDIA provides tools for data generation, reconstruction, and simulation; and Azure provides cloud storage and compute within Volkswagen’s existing governance environment. The system focuses on identifying rare safety-critical events in large volumes of driving data, auditing recordings for sensor, timing, calibration, and metadata issues before reconstruction, and comparing simulated results with real-world measurements to support virtual testing of software releases. Volkswagen aims to retain control over its data, models, and development process while relying on specialized external infrastructure, and the collaboration projects reductions of up to 90% in repeated physical test-drive effort and up to 85% in AI regression-testing cycles.
