Neural Reconstruction for AV: Fleet Logs to NuRec and Cosmos
Blog post from Voxel51
Voxel51 describes an autonomous-vehicle data flywheel developed with Porsche, Volkswagen Group, CARIAD, NVIDIA, and Microsoft that links scenario discovery, sensor-data validation, synthetic-data generation, neural reconstruction, and evaluation in a traceable workflow running on customer infrastructure such as Azure. The platform uses NVIDIA Cosmos Dataset Search to locate relevant video segments through semantic search, audits raw MCAP recordings with checks for calibration, timing, trajectories, and sensor issues before costly reconstruction, and records fixes and evidence to improve later runs. Cosmos Data Factory generates scenario variations while retaining each clip’s source, generation recipe, model settings, and evaluation evidence, enabling teams to compare cost, quality, and judge criteria without repeating GPU work. Omniverse NuRec reconstructs audited driving scenes into rendered images, 3D assets, and USDZ files for simulation, while Voxel51 tracks processing stages and supports comparisons across runs. Evaluation combines PSNR, SSIM, LPIPS, actor-level checks, and human review because a single metric can obscure visible reconstruction failures, particularly in dark scenes. Porsche plans to use the system for virtual validation of driving software, and Volkswagen Group projects that the approach could substantially reduce physical test-driving effort and shorten development cycles.
