Build Offline Agent Loops for a Vonage Voice Agent
Blog post from Vonage
Benjamin Aronov’s Vonage tutorial explains how to add an offline, human-supervised improvement loop to a Vonage and Deepgram order-status voice agent without allowing it to modify itself automatically. Building on an existing SQLite database of call transcripts, tool results, fallbacks, and handoffs, the project provides a regression runner, a transcript-review script, and synthetic call data that developers can use through simple npm commands. The regression suite replays approved test cases through the same decision logic used by the live agent, using mock tool outcomes to verify behaviors such as successful lookups, timeouts, valid not-found results, and transfers for out-of-scope requests. The review loop deterministically analyzes recent call records for recurring handoff reasons, timeouts, unanswered questions, and policy-blocked fallbacks, then creates pending proposals only after configurable evidence thresholds are met. Human reviewers must approve or dismiss each proposal before it becomes part of the regression suite, while duplicate detection prevents repeated findings from cluttering the queue. The approach emphasizes auditable SQL- and TypeScript-based pattern detection rather than LLM-driven analysis, preserving predictable results and ensuring that decisions about new features or desired behavior remain with developers. An optional local dashboard displays pending proposals, evaluation history, and recent calls from the same SQLite database, and the tutorial suggests future extensions such as CI integration, scheduled reviews, proposal annotations, and team-based approval workflows.
