Summary

In video encoding, keyframes or I-frames are complete images that can be decoded independently, whereas P- and B-frames store changes relative to other frames; in H.264 streaming, IDR frames are especially important because they provide clean decoding entry points. The interval between keyframes defines GOP length and affects how quickly viewers can start playback, seek, or switch streaming quality, while also balancing compression efficiency against responsiveness because more frequent keyframes consume more bitrate. A two-second interval is widely recommended for HLS and live platforms such as Apple HLS, YouTube Live, Amazon IVS, and Cloudflare Stream because video segments need to begin with independently decodable frames, although lower-latency configurations may use one-second intervals and longer intervals can impair playback or rendition switching. WebRTC generally handles keyframes dynamically in response to joins or packet loss rather than using a fixed segmentation-driven interval. In OBS, setting the keyframe interval to 0 delegates the choice to the encoder, with x264 commonly defaulting to 250 frames—about 8.3 seconds at 30 fps or 4.2 seconds at 60 fps—so explicitly setting it to two seconds is more reliable for common streaming requirements. Scene-cut detection can still add extra keyframes, and the encoding meaning of a keyframe differs from animation and editing software, where it is a timeline marker defining a change over time.
