Webinar API: Build Embedded Webinars with VideoSDK
Blog post from Video SDK
Webinar APIs serve two distinct purposes: workflow APIs automate scheduling, registration, reminders, attendance, and reporting within hosted platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, GoTo Webinar, Livestorm, and webinar.net, while embedded media APIs such as VideoSDK enable organizations to build branded live webinar experiences directly into web or mobile products. VideoSDK combines server-side room, token, recording, streaming, and analytics APIs with client SDKs that control real-time media, presenter and audience roles, screen sharing, chat, polls, and interface behavior, but leaves registration, email, CRM, payments, moderation policy, and other business workflows to the application. The guide recommends separating control, media, and event layers, using short-lived backend-generated JWTs, assigning attendees receive-only access unless promoted, and testing HTTPS permissions, corporate networks, TURN fallback, token renewal, observability, and recovery processes before launch. It distinguishes interactive live streaming, suited to audience participation and controlled speaking roles, from HLS-based delivery for larger, mostly passive audiences, noting that actual scale and latency depend on configuration and should be validated. VideoSDK is positioned as a fit for education, commerce, communities, onboarding, and other products that require ownership of identity, data, roles, layouts, and engagement, while hosted webinar APIs are more suitable when provider-managed attendee experiences and workflow automation are sufficient.
