Noise Suppression for Voice & Video Calls
Blog post from Video SDK
Noise suppression is real-time audio processing that reduces background sounds such as fans, traffic, hum, and typing from a sender’s microphone signal while preserving speech for call participants, unlike active noise cancellation, which improves what a headphone user hears. It is distinct from the broader term noise reduction, as well as echo cancellation, which removes speaker audio leaking back into a microphone, and automatic gain control, which stabilizes speech volume. Classic denoisers estimate noise in short audio frames using approaches such as spectral subtraction, Wiener filtering, and MMSE estimation, while AI-based systems such as RNNoise use trained neural networks to better handle changing sounds like clicks, barking, or competing voices. Web browsers expose basic microphone processing through WebRTC constraints including noiseSuppression, echoCancellation, and autoGainControl, although noise suppression availability and results vary by browser and provide only on-or-off control. VideoSDK offers built-in speech presets and a beta AI noise suppressor for web and Flutter apps that can process a microphone stream before it is published, while Android and Apple platforms provide their own operating-system-level voice-processing options. The guidance recommends testing for trade-offs such as speech distortion, music suppression, overlapping speakers, device CPU load, and the effects of combining multiple suppressors, then starting with browser or SDK defaults before adding AI processing if needed.
