State of agent skills
Blog post from Vercel
Skills.sh grew to more than one million AI agent skills and nearly 280 million installs within seven months, reflecting how reusable natural-language instructions can turn specialized work practices into widely distributed software. Launched after Anthropic introduced Agent Skills, the registry expanded faster than several major software ecosystems because many more people can describe effective workflows than can build conventional applications. Although technical topics, especially software engineering, dominate the available listings, installs are spread across business operations, writing, infrastructure, agent workflows, and other functions, with business, writing, and cloud skills receiving especially high demand relative to their supply. Skills that improve agents’ own planning, tool use, routing, and automation are among the most popular, while installs are heavily concentrated among a small number of broadly useful skills: 375 listings account for 62% of installs, though no individual skill represents more than 1%. Cross-industry skills generate 87.5% of installs and average 3.6 times more installs per listing than industry-specific ones, suggesting portability is a major driver of value. The report expects public skills to make general expertise commonplace while company-specific judgment, tested performance, benchmarks, and maintainable internal knowledge become the next sources of differentiation.
