How Vercel Agent accesses production safely
Blog post from Vercel
Vercel Agent uses a plan-based permission model for production tasks, allowing it to investigate issues with a read-only baseline before proposing changes that require user approval. Plans connect a user’s requested outcome to specific tasks, required authorization scopes, and enforcement through short-lived OAuth tokens, while ensuring the agent can act only within the approving user’s existing team permissions. Read-only work may proceed automatically, although longer investigations can be displayed as plans, whereas actions such as redeployments, configuration changes, or external GitHub pull requests require approval for the relevant scopes and providers. The system validates requested scopes against Vercel’s shared scope registry, stores plans and their approval states for resumable work, and checks that a plan remains active before selecting credentials. Vercel notes that scopes can still be broad, read-only access can expose sensitive information, and agent errors or malicious content may create risks, so scoped permissions are intended to operate alongside safeguards such as sandboxing, network policies, secret handling, rate limits, audit logs, and service-level authorization.
