Backends on Vercel: Python, containers, and Daemons
Blog post from Vercel
Vercel announced expanded backend capabilities at Vercel Ship, making Python on Vercel generally available, adding container support for Vercel Functions, and launching Vercel Daemons in public beta for persistent background workers. Python applications using frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, and Django can run on standard CPython with PyPI dependencies while using Vercel’s existing development, preview, deployment, scaling, and product integrations; the company says more than 150,000 teams already use Python backends on its platform. Containerized Functions allow applications in any language to include required operating-system libraries and executables, scale on Fluid compute, and avoid charges for idle waiting time under Active CPU pricing. Vercel Daemons enables containers to remain active between jobs, maintain configured regional capacity, restart after failures, and handle pull-based work such as consuming queue messages or querying databases for pending tasks. The announcement illustrates these capabilities with a video application that combines a Next.js frontend, Python API, Vercel Queues, and a containerized worker using ffmpeg to process uploaded videos and create thumbnails.
