FinOps as Code: Automating Jira Issues

In a demonstration of integrating cost management and task automation, this article outlines a process to automate the creation of Jira issues based on Vantage cost recommendations. Using APIs from both Jira and Vantage, the process involves developing a Python script that retrieves financial optimization recommendations from Vantage for cloud provider accounts like AWS and Datadog, and then automatically generates corresponding Jira tasks. These tasks, which include details such as potential savings and affected services, are assigned to relevant teams, allowing for centralized and automated management of cost-saving opportunities within organizations. The demonstration requires a basic understanding of Python, Jira, and API authentication, and provides a workflow to filter and process recommendations, and create Jira issues that teams can easily access to address identified cost-saving measures.
