How pro-China are Chinese models?
Blog post from Vals
A comparative evaluation of Chinese, American, and other AI models found that political responses concerning China vary substantially by model, prompt language, deployment context, response format, and use within agent frameworks rather than following a uniform pattern of censorship or support for the Chinese government. Using hundreds of sensitive factual, opinion, and normative questions, the researchers defined “pro-China lean” as alignment with official PRC narratives or favorable portrayals of the government, observing that Chinese models could sometimes criticize China while some non-Chinese models occasionally repeated PRC positions. Simplified Chinese prompts generally elicited more China-favorable responses than English, Traditional Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, particularly among Chinese models, and stating that a model was deployed in the United States often reduced this tendency. Rather than simply refusing sensitive questions, many models answered while endorsing official narratives, although refusal behavior differed widely, especially for some DeepSeek models. Forced yes-or-no formats, decision-model probability outputs, and agent or tool contexts also altered results, sometimes reducing measured pro-China lean, while fine-tuning open-weight Qwen-derived models substantially reduced but did not always eliminate such behavior. The study additionally identified instances in translation and image-generation tasks where political framing appeared indirectly, such as translating Taiwan as “Taiwan, China” or labeling it a province, and concludes that political-alignment evaluations should test multiple languages, contexts, formats, and realistic agentic tasks while accounting for hosting-provider and API-guardrail differences.
