The hidden cost of environment drift
Blog post from Upsun
Environment drift is the gradual, often untracked divergence of development, staging, and production systems caused by manual configuration changes, inconsistent provisioning, stale data, dependency differences, and long-lived environments. Although individual shortcuts may seem reasonable, their cumulative effects can slow releases, increase rollbacks and incident resolution times, complicate onboarding, duplicate tooling, and raise infrastructure costs. The post argues that adding approval processes can further reduce delivery speed, whereas defining infrastructure and environments as code creates consistency by provisioning each environment from a shared, repeatable definition. It also advocates short-lived, branch-based preview environments that are created fresh and removed after use to limit accumulated changes. Organizations should first identify where drift exists and measure its engineering and financial impact, then make standardized, reproducible environments the default without limiting high-performing teams.
