From bug report to verified fix in a single workflow
Blog post from Upsun
Upsun’s workflow for resolving production bugs uses a cloned preview environment to carry a problem from reproduction through validation without rebuilding test data or approximating production services. The walkthrough examines a discount-code failure affecting some annual billing customers, which existing tests missed because the logic relied on a billing-cycle field populated differently for annual plans. A branch created with production-equivalent resources and cloned data allowed developers to reproduce the issue, connect local tools through service tunnels, inspect logs, and use remote debugging against the affected accounts. An initial fix exposed an additional issue for multi-year plans, but both cases were tested in the same environment before merging. To protect privacy, preview deployments can run custom sanitization scripts that anonymize personal information while preserving the operational data needed for debugging. The approach is intended to let teams validate fixes under production-like conditions, then merge and remove the temporary environment when investigation is complete.
