The Upstash MCP Server Is Now Remote

Upstash has launched a hosted MCP server at mcp.upstash.com/mcp, replacing its previous laptop-only local setup with an OAuth-based HTTP connection that supports remote agents and plugin installations. Users can authorize personal or team accounts, choose read-only access, manage approved clients, or authenticate non-interactive environments such as CI with Developer API keys. The server provides 38 tools for managing and querying Redis, QStash, Workflow, Vector, and Search resources, while URL feature groups can limit available tools to preserve agent context. OAuth allows the server to retrieve resource credentials internally for data operations, while read-only grants prevent changes and remove returned tokens or passwords. The existing CLI and local MCP server remain available, with the local version retaining Box support and the remote service adding Vector and Search support. Remote hosting also enables browser-based consent for agents running outside a user's machine and allows Upstash plugins to bundle MCP connectivity without exposing long-lived credentials. Planned improvements include OAuth for the CLI, support for provider-based accounts, remote Box tools, consent-time feature scoping, and additional management capabilities such as backup restoration and database plan changes.
