Context7 vs Exa: Fresher Docs in a Tenth of the Tokens
Blog post from Upstash
A benchmark of 44 API changes across 32 JavaScript and Python libraries found that Context7 returned responses containing only current APIs in 59% of searches, compared with 25% for Exa fast search and 18% for Exa’s AI SDK tool, while using roughly one-tenth as many tokens; Exa was faster, however, particularly in fast-search mode. The test used version-specific questions based on documented 2026 API renames or removals, ran each question twice through all tools, and excluded cases where official current documentation still showed obsolete examples. Exa’s stale results commonly came from GitHub repositories, Stack Overflow, archived projects, old guides, and unofficial mirrors, though Context7 also sometimes surfaced outdated versioned documentation or first-party source files that lagged behind current docs. Context7 is presented as most useful for official library documentation, whereas Exa’s wider web coverage is better suited to issues, announcements, and news. Context7 maintains freshness by indexing owner-published sources, prioritizing current versions, regularly refreshing popular libraries, supporting owner-triggered updates, and allowing library and version hints in searches. The page also demonstrates integrating Context7 as a documentation-search tool in an AI SDK coding agent and notes planned improvements in freshness detection, version matching, and result relevance.
