Automated Browser Testing on a Schedule with Upstash Box
Blog post from Upstash
Upstash Boxes provide a scheduled, disposable environment for long-running browser tests that may be unsuitable for conventional CI, combining shell access, Git, Chromium, filesystem storage, cron scheduling, and pay-per-active-minute pricing. Tests can use Playwright locally against the box’s Chromium instance to inspect pages, capture screenshots, and run deterministic DOM-based comparisons, while avoiding fragile pixel-level assertions by comparing an application or site against a working reference such as production, a prior release, or another implementation. Because boxes are temporary, screenshots can be stored in Upstash Blob, test state and failure fingerprints in Redis, and actionable reports in GitHub issues, preventing duplicate reports and preserving evidence. The approach supports regression testing, production synthetic monitoring, staging-versus-production checks, content validation, and compatibility testing with external formats. Upstash describes using this model for Docs7, which nightly compares its Mintlify-format renderer with previews of public Mintlify repositories, then records differences, uploads screenshot evidence, and creates or updates GitHub issues.
