Operational feature flags: runtime controls for financial services
Blog post from Unleash
Operational feature flags can serve as permanent runtime controls for financial institutions, allowing teams to alter production behavior without deploying code during outages, security events, capacity constraints, or regulatory changes. The article describes uses including vendor-specific dependency kill switches, targeted load shedding, staged graceful degradation, regional disaster-recovery evacuation, controlled chaos testing, fraud-risk posture settings, trading order-flow halts, telemetry sampling adjustments, mainframe offloading, jurisdictional product gating, and open-banking traffic prioritization. It argues that these controls should support granular targeting by customer, channel, region, product, or transaction type; configurable fallback policies; gradual and sticky rollouts; approval workflows and audit logs; and local SDK evaluation with cached defaults so controls remain usable when central systems are unavailable. Unlike temporary release flags, operational flags require clear ownership, documented runbooks, scheduled testing, pre-authorized emergency procedures, and governance over which users or services receive degraded experiences.
