How to Read a Patient's Procedure and Surgical History with
Blog post from Unified.to
Unified.to’s Healthcare API provides a single method for retrieving a patient’s surgeries, endoscopies, biopsies, and other procedures from 12 EHR platforms, returning a standardized Procedure object connected to relevant visits, clinicians, locations, conditions, and reasons. Procedure history supports clinical decisions, quality measures, care-gap outreach, prior authorization, and patient summaries, while reducing reliance on manually maintained surgical histories. Developers can list procedures for a patient or use patient-launch authorization, display records chronologically, and identify completed procedures using coded systems such as CPT, SNOMED CT, and ICD-10-PCS rather than procedure names alone. The API distinguishes statuses including completed, planned but not performed, and entered-in-error, while providing timing, anatomical site, and clinical justification data. EHR support differs by platform, with an empty response indicating no recorded procedures and a 501 response indicating that an EHR does not expose the data; procedures are read-only, and update tracking is available through timestamps and virtual webhooks for selected systems. Operative notes are retrieved separately as clinical documents and can be associated with procedures through encounter IDs.
