The author of the article is a millennial who has been helping his retired parents with their technology at home. However, as they live in another country, troubleshooting IT issues has become more challenging due to time zone differences and security risks associated with opening ports on their network. The author discovered that Twingate, a company he works for, provides an ideal solution to achieve secure remote access to devices on his parents' network. To make this setup easy for non-IT trained individuals, the author created a simple project using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, which can be plugged into any power socket and automatically connect to their WiFi network. The process involves installing the Raspberry Pi OS, configuring it to boot up with the WiFi network credentials, and then setting up Twingate's Connector software on the device. This setup allows for secure remote access to devices on his parents' network, enabling them to troubleshoot issues independently without requiring physical visits.
