The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) held a Twitter Mashup contest where developers were challenged to create innovative mashups with Twilio, a cloud communication platform, to voice enable the social web. One application developed by Wayne Dyck stood out as groundbreaking, and WSDOT is now keeping this category open for resubmissions. The WSDOT Twitter Voice Reports feature allows users to receive automated voice calls for wait times at Washington State Ferries terminals and northbound Canadian border crossings by sending a direct message to @wsdot or through SMS using specific formats. Users can also receive information on current wait times from their cellphones by sending text messages to 40404 with similar formats. The feature is available for both Twitter users and cellphone users, and more information can be found on the WSDOT website.
