On-Demand Masked Sessions with Twilio Proxy, Voice and Serverless

Twilio’s tutorial presents a serverless Just-in-Time masked-session architecture for delivery, ridesharing, and marketplace communications where callers cannot be pre-associated with proxy numbers in advance. A caller dials a reserved Twilio Proxy number, enters a six-digit tracking code through an IVR, and the system uses a bidirectional Twilio Sync Map lookup to identify the appropriate counterparty without exposing either person’s actual phone number. Because Proxy’s out-of-session callback does not retain keypad input, the design uses a two-bounce workflow: it stores the resolved destination temporarily in a Twilio Sync Document keyed to the call SID, redirects the active call back to Proxy, and then returns JSON that enables Proxy to automatically create and bridge a voice-only session. The implementation uses Node.js, Twilio Serverless Functions, Proxy, Voice, and Sync, with endpoints for out-of-session handling, code collection, lookup, and callback-based cleanup. It also validates Twilio callback signatures before closing sessions after terminal call outcomes, helping return scarce proxy numbers to the pool quickly while supporting flexible, secure contact by couriers, customers, restaurants, drivers, and authorized third parties.
