New Sending Requirements for Gmail & Yahoo!
Blog post from Twilio
In October 2023, Google and Yahoo! announced new email authentication requirements for high-volume senders, set to be enforced by Gmail from February 2024, marking a transition from recommendations to enforceable standards. These changes necessitate senders to implement SPF, DKIM, and DMARC policies, with Google's requirements emphasizing the publication of a DMARC record, although not necessarily at enforcement levels, acknowledging the complexities involved. Senders must ensure alignment between their email's From header and either the SPF or DKIM domains, maintain valid DNS records, include a one-click unsubscribe option to mitigate spam complaints, and keep spam rates below 0.3% as per Google Postmaster Tools. The new guidelines, which are already considered best practices, aim to bolster email security and reduce domain-based abuse, with Twilio SendGrid providing tools and support to help users comply. While the changes may cause initial friction, they are seen as steps towards a more secure and enhanced inbox experience, reinforcing the importance of email authentication in digital communication.
