List-Unsubscribe Header: What It Is & How to Use It
Blog post from Twilio
A list-unsubscribe header is an optional email feature that allows recipients to opt out of future messages directly from their email client interface, enhancing the user experience and protecting the sender's reputation by reducing spam complaints. Supported by major email providers like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, and iOS Mail, this feature aligns with the CAN-SPAM Act's requirement for an unsubscribe mechanism in commercial emails, although it is not legally mandated. By simplifying the opt-out process, list-unsubscribe headers help maintain a healthy and engaged email list, as they prevent recipients from having to mark unwanted emails as spam. The header can be implemented using either the mailto: method, which is email-based, or the HTTP: method, which is web-based, with different providers having specific preferences and requirements. Incorporating list-unsubscribe headers is considered a best practice for businesses to ensure compliance and improve deliverability, while also providing recipients with an easy way to manage their email preferences.
