The company's platform will now redirect SMS texts and voice calls sent to 988 from US phone numbers to the Lifeline, providing a vital lifeline for individuals in distress. This support aims to address the growing mental health crisis in the US, with one death by suicide occurring every 11 minutes among people aged 10-34 years, and over 100,000 deaths from drug overdoses between April 2020 and 2021. Twilio's implementation of the 988 code will enable individuals who reach out to customers offering crisis communications to access the Lifeline directly. The company has committed to supporting mental health assistance and has partnered with organizations such as Trans Lifeline, NAMI, and the Trevor Project to provide critical services.
