The Evolution of 2FA: Balancing Security and Convenience to Best Serve Consumers`
Two-factor authentication (2FA) and multi-factor authentication (MFA) enhance security where passwords falter, offering users more protection than a password alone. Businesses must balance the need for security with user convenience, as users may not want to be inconvenienced in order to protect their information. 2FA is now offered by most businesses during account creation, log-in, or when accessing sensitive information, primarily through SMS one-time-passcodes sent via mobile device and phone number. Newer "push" authentication solutions offer a similar convenience level as SMS but use a mobile app and public key cryptography for enhanced security. These solutions can also provide users with more control over their personal information and data hygiene. Push verification offers greater reliability, lower costs, and predictability compared to SMS, although carriers are implementing new systems to improve SMS delivery security.
