Low latency API endpoints from analytical SQL
Blog post from Tinybird
Low-latency analytics APIs require optimizing the entire request path, including authentication, routing, query queueing, ClickHouse execution, serialization, networking, and connection management, rather than focusing only on database query speed. The recommended approach is to serve product-facing dashboards and KPI endpoints from pre-aggregated rollup tables, such as ClickHouse AggregatingMergeTree tables, while reserving raw event data for tightly bounded, authenticated drill-down and operational searches. Endpoints should use typed, bound parameters and JWT-enforced tenant scoping to improve security, plan reuse, and data isolation, alongside execution timeouts, row limits, rate limiting, workload separation, and appropriate replica capacity. Rollups are presented as a more reliable alternative to short-lived query-result caching because they match common UI access patterns while preserving predictable performance, though ingestion lag must be included in freshness expectations. Tinybird is described as a managed ClickHouse-based option that publishes parameterized SQL Pipes as authenticated HTTP endpoints and provides ingestion tools, branch-based testing, endpoint metrics, and tenant controls, reducing the need to build a custom API layer. Common latency problems include querying raw events for dashboards, accepting unbounded time ranges, returning unnecessary JSON data, failing to pool database connections, and applying identical latency targets to fast rollups and more complex search endpoints.
