FAIR data principles: What you need to know
Blog post from Tile.ai
FAIR data principles, introduced in 2016 by Mark D. Wilkinson and collaborators, aim to make research data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable for both people and computational systems, particularly in complex life-sciences environments involving genomics, imaging, clinical records, and other multimodal data. Findability relies on persistent identifiers and rich metadata, accessibility on standardized and secure retrieval methods, interoperability on machine-readable formats and shared vocabularies, and reusability on clear licensing, provenance, documentation, and quality information. FAIR does not require data to be publicly open, as restricted data can still be FAIR when authorized users and systems can discover and use it under well-defined conditions; it also differs from the CARE principles, which emphasize Indigenous data governance, collective benefit, responsibility, and ethics. Advocates argue that FAIR practices can accelerate discovery, support AI and machine learning, improve reproducibility, reduce duplicated work, increase the value of data investments, and strengthen collaboration across organizational silos. Implementation remains difficult because of fragmented systems, inconsistent metadata and ontologies, costly legacy-data conversion, cultural resistance, and infrastructure designed primarily for tabular rather than multimodal data. Recommended steps include creating searchable data catalogs, assigning persistent IDs, adopting metadata standards and domain-specific formats, using controlled vocabularies, documenting permissions and provenance, and establishing governance and licensing practices; the source presents Tile.ai as a platform intended to support these efforts by cataloging data in place and providing consistent structure, metadata, access controls, and traceability.
