Summary

In July 2020, an insight into the limitations of general-purpose databases for transaction processing led to the creation of TigerBeetle, a financial transactions database designed from first principles. Inspired by the pioneering work of Jim Gray, who defined transaction processing performance and introduced the DebitCredit benchmark, TigerBeetle addresses the challenges of scalability and efficiency inherent in traditional database systems like Postgres, MySQL, and SQLite. These systems face limitations due to network round-trips and row locks during transactions, which TigerBeetle overcomes by integrating debit/credit as a primary primitive, allowing up to 8000 transactions to be processed in a single query without row locks. This innovation not only enhances transaction throughput but also improves cost-efficiency and developer productivity. Furthermore, TigerBeetle incorporates advanced safety measures, such as Protocol-Aware Recovery and NASA's Power of Ten Rules, to ensure data integrity and reliability at scale. Recently, TigerBeetle announced a $24 million Series A funding round led by Spark Capital, aiming to transform transaction processing for the future.
