A Descent Into the Vörtex

TigerBeetle has introduced a new non-deterministic testing harness called Vortex, designed to complement their existing Deterministic Simulation Testing (DST) by increasing the coverage of non-deterministic parts of their system. Vortex is a generative full-system test suite that tests safety and liveness properties through fault injection, focusing on compiled binaries and client libraries to mimic real deployment stress. It also tests multiple client languages, which are not fully covered by DST, to identify potential bugs that could be missed by other tests. The architecture of Vortex involves a supervisor to coordinate workloads and inject faults, a driver for executing tasks, and replicas of the actual TigerBeetle release binaries. Since its inception four months ago, Vortex has already identified two bugs and verified a memory issue, proving it to be an effective tool for detecting coverage gaps. Future plans for Vortex include continuous automation, version upgrade testing, and more complex network and storage fault simulations, underscoring TigerBeetle's commitment to defense-in-depth and comprehensive testing.
