Test Oracle Problem: How to Test AI With No Expected Output
Blog post from TestMu AI
Testing AI systems is constrained by the test oracle problem, in which outputs such as summaries, plans, and drafted replies often lack a single objectively correct answer; research on open-source agent frameworks indicates that developers therefore concentrate testing on deterministic tools and workflows rather than model-driven planning. Effective AI testing separates each feature into individual acceptance criteria and assigns the strongest available source of truth, including specified requirements, derived evidence from code, declared tools and schemas, implicit checks for crashes or invalid output, proxy judgments from secondary models, and human review. For tool-using agents, tests should validate real effects in databases, files, or read-only status checks rather than relying on an agent’s claims about completed actions, while property-based, metamorphic, regression, and controlled-environment testing can assess behavior without requiring fixed expected outputs. LLM judges can serve as proxy oracles when they use structured rubrics, cite evidence, evaluate dimensions separately, and can return an unknown result, although their judgments remain evidence rather than definitive proof. The text argues that criteria without sufficient evidence should be reported as “Unable to Verify” or inconclusive rather than omitted or counted as passes or failures, allowing teams to distinguish pass rates from verification coverage. It presents TestMu AI’s Agent Assurance and its Rook CLI as an implementation approach that derives checks from agent code and declared tools, observes tool calls and state changes, uses judges where necessary, and recommends staging environments because agent actions may have real effects.
