Gemini CLI vs Claude Code: Access, CI, and a Same-Task Test
Blog post from TestMu AI
Gemini CLI and Claude Code are terminal-based coding agents whose suitability now depends largely on account access: Gemini CLI remains available to Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise users, Code Assist for GitHub customers, and paid Gemini API or Vertex AI users, while free Google accounts and Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers were moved to Antigravity CLI in June 2026; Claude Code requires a paid Claude plan or usage-billed API access. In a controlled two-run test where both agents implemented search, status filtering, counts, and an empty state in the same web app, all four outputs passed browser-based checks, but Claude Code completed each run in about 89–94 seconds versus Gemini CLI’s 436–863 seconds, although the comparison reflects their default models and CLI harnesses rather than a direct model benchmark. Gemini CLI is open source under Apache 2.0 and supports layered GEMINI.md context, configurable skills, MCP servers, sandboxing, and Google Cloud-oriented workflows, while Claude Code uses CLAUDE.md, skills, MCP configuration, automatic checkpoints, and paid Anthropic access. For CI, both can run headlessly but require careful permission, authentication, trust, and hook settings, and the account recommends validating generated work with independent browser tests rather than relying on an agent’s completion report. Teams using Gemini CLI can share instructions through AGENTS.md with Claude Code, while individual Google users migrating to Antigravity CLI can retain much of their context configuration but must relocate some skills and MCP settings.
