evidence-cli: An Open Format for Test Run Evidence
Blog post from TestMu AI
Evidence CLI is an Apache-2.0, framework-agnostic open container and validation tool for preserving test-run evidence in a consistent `.evidence` directory or zip format, allowing outputs from browser, API, Playwright, Jest, and other testing tools to be inspected without knowledge of their original producer. Each pack includes a `run.yaml` manifest, an opaque and hashed test definition, a `result.yaml` verdict with step outcomes, and optional artifacts such as screenshots, logs, and network captures. Its versioned contract currently uses version 0.1 and supports an additive profile model, with the standalone CLI defaulting to the minimal L0 profile while Kane CLI defaults to the stricter L1 profile. The package, which requires Node 18 or later, validates directories or sealed archives, returns exit codes suited to CI use, and can finalize or seal packs but does not itself run tests or capture evidence. Kane CLI serves as the reference producer, automatically generating sealed packs with artifacts after runs, while the project’s schemas, specifications, decision records, and governance materials are maintained openly in its repository.
